Why Today’s Smart Investors Are Skipping Single-Unit Deals in 2025

Franchising’s Fast Lane Is No Longer Single-Unit

What if the new path to franchise success didn’t start small?

For decades, the "start-with-one" playbook defined franchise ownership. Today, a growing wave of first-time franchisees is flipping that model. They're skipping the single-unit step and diving straight into multi-unit ownership. And they’re not just growing fast; they're building modern empires.

In 2025, we’re seeing a sharp pivot toward multi-territory deals, driven by tech-savvy operators, accessible funding, and stronger franchisor support.

So, what’s changed?

Why This Matters Now: Franchisors Are Betting on Scale

More than 50% of all franchised units in the U.S. are now operated by multi-unit owners, and that figure continues to grow. (GODFRAY LEGAL)

What’s Driving First-Timers to Go Multi?

  • Franchisor Infrastructure: Training programs, shared resources, and tech tools are built for scale.

  • Improved Capital Access: SBA loans and multi-unit financing options make larger deals feasible.

  • Mindset Shift: Buyers now see franchises as investment portfolios, not just a business replacement.

  • Territory Incentives: Franchisors often waive or reduce fees for multi-unit package deals.

  • Scalable Operations: Regional managers, unified systems, and shared staff make expanding easier.

What You Need to Know Before You Scale

If Multi-Unit Ownership is your goal, start here:

  1. Franchise Agreement Review: Look for area development schedules and territory exclusivity.

  2. Capital Requirements: Many brands expect $500K+ net worth and $150K–$250K liquid capital.

  3. Operational Support: Ensure the franchisor provides scalable systems and regional management support.

  4. Exit Strategy Clarity: Understand resale rights and valuation triggers across multiple locations.

  5. Peer Benchmarking: Seek brands with proven, successful multi-unit owners in the field.

Tools Modern Empire Builders Use

  • Multi-location CRMs to centralize marketing and customer retention.

  • Dashboard Analytics for comparing unit-level KPIs.

  • Regional Hiring Platforms for streamlined staffing.

  • Franchisee Peer Networks offering mentoring and best practices.
